SOCIB featured in UNIDATA news

Unidata is a community of education and research institutions which provides software tools to access and visualize Earth-system data, for more than 25 years. Unidata is one of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR, https://www2.ucar.edu/) Community Programs (UCP).  After a discussion between UCP and SOCIB Data Centre staff at the Ocean Data Interoperability Platform (ODIP, http://odip.org/) conference earlier this year, SOCIB was invited to submit a news describing the innovative use of THREDDS and other Unidata technologies at Data Centre.

Unidata has developed the NetCDF format, one of the most used file format in oceanic and atmospheric sciences, and which is used for a large part of SOCIB data: gridded fields from model, satellite or HF radar, glider profiles, drifter trajectories, etc. These data are made available through a Thredds Data Server (TDS, http://thredds.socib.es/thredds/catalog.html), a web server also developed at Unidata, and that provides metadata and data access for scientific datasets, using a variety of remote data access protocols. The conception of specific applications for smart-phones and for general public (SeaBoards) was also an element that caught the attention of UCP staff.
