SOCIB at 'Marginal Seas In Change' Workshop in Korea

SOCIB was presented at the 2nd workshop on "Marginal Seas in Change – The East Sea and the Mediterranean Sea", organized by Research Institute of Oceanography/Seoul National University/The Korean Society of Oceanography in Busan, from 24-26 September 2014.

The similarities in oceanographic characteristics between the East Sea (Sea of Japan) and the Mediterranean Sea have been recognized since the early 1990s. Both seas are marginal seas in the world that form intermediate and deep waters as a result of convection during winter cold-air outbreaks. The similarities have mainly attracted physical oceanographers, while comparisons of marine ecosystem and biogeochemical aspects are scarce. Rapid climate variability and change in the seas in both physical and biogeochemical properties as compared with those in the open oceans are compelling.

The SOCIB multi-platform approach was presented and discussed.
