SOCIB & EuroSea: Gathering more Knowledge for a sustainable Use of the Ocean

SOCIB has actively participated in the EuroSea Kick-off meeting, at the Royal Belgian Museum of Natural Sciences (RBINS) in Brussels on 27-29 November 2019, organized by GEOMAR, RBINS and EuroGOOS. The kick-off meeting has offered a unique opportunity to plan the project’s success from the outset. The EuroSea consortium members and many project’s supporters have came together for a shared vision, implementation, stakeholder engagement and impact generation in EuroSea.

EuroSea project titled Improving and Integrating European Ocean Observing and Forecasting Systems for Sustainable Use of the Oceans is an EU Horizon 2020 Innovation Action. It brings together key European actors of ocean observation and forecasting with key end users of ocean observations, contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) and the Future of the Seas and Oceans Flagship Initiative. The EuroSea’s innovative demonstration activities are focused on operational services, ocean health and climate, where a dialogue between actors in the ocean observing systems will guide the development of the services.

EuroSea builds on the achievements of the Horizon 2020 AtlantOS project and continues the work begun there in all European seas, including the Mediterranean Sea and its neighbors. In this context, SOCIB is intensively involved in six of the ten work packages: WP1 on Ocean Best Practices System (OBPS), WP2 and WP4 on Ocean forecasting and Data assimilation, WP3 on Integrating science, WP6 on Healthy ocean and WP8 Communication.

EuroSea is an international and interdisciplinary consortium of 55 partners from 13 European countries as well as Brazil and Canada has now joined forces in the EuroSea project with the aim to significantly improve ocean observation in Europe and beyond. The European Union is funding the project with a total of 12.6 million euros until 2023.
