Members of the J'MON Team, winners of the last edition of the "Underwater Gliders Design Competition", organized by the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) and sponsored by SOCIB, visited SOCIB on September 24, 2012.
J'MON team consists of Daniel Merino, Elkin Mauricio, Luís García and Hugo Ramos, their design won the first prize to the "Most Optimized Design" awarded by the UPM and the special prize awarded by SOCIB to the "Best Technological Innovation". SOCIB invited the members of the J'MON team to participate in a real glider deployment and to visit SOCIB headquarters, where SOCIB team presented the ongoing activities with particular emphasis on the role of science, technology development, and innovation to advance towards knowledge based management of our oceans and coasts.
Additionally, the winners were received at IMEDEA's glider facilities in where the most important aspects of the laboratory work and preparation for a mission were introduced as well as a complete and detailed master class on mechanics, parts and configuration was imparted in two sessions. Although the field work could not be carried out due to very bad sea conditions, all the members of the J'mon team expressed how pleased they were to have actively participated in very representative operations such as ballasting, hull disassembly and remote control amongst others. At the end of the visit, the J'MON team members declared that such an enriching experience had renewed their interest for achieving a more comprehensive glider knowledge and improving their winning design. Finally, they wanted to also thank Mr. Jesús Valle for his initiative in organizing the competition.
