SOCIB joins the 2021 European Researchers’ Night organising an Open Day to the Research Vessel SOCIB
- On Friday, September 24, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., technicians and researchers at SOCIB will conduct guided tours to the Research Vessel SOCIB, also offering a public photo exhibition to disseminate the activity of this public research infrastructure.
This Friday, September 24, the Balearic Islands Coastal Observing and Forecasting System (SOCIB) celebrates the 2021 European Researchers’ Night to disseminate its research and the impact of the ocean and marine sciences in our daily lives, through various free activities. Between 6 pm and 9 pm, this public institution dedicated to marine and coastal research in the Mediterranean will offer guided tours in Spanish (prior registration required) to the Research Vessel SOCIB and will also showcase the SOCIB photo exhibition: “Researching the ocean, sharing the future”. Both activities are aimed at all audiences and will take place on-site at the Escalera Real of the port of Palma, in front of La Lonja, guaranteeing all COVID-19 security measures.
Researchers and technicians at SOCIB are now finalizing the preparations for the Research Vessel SOCIB Open Day, with the aim of sharing their passion for the sea with the general public and foster knowledge on how the ocean is investigated in the 21st century, showing the fieldwork and scientific equipment used during oceanographic campaigns. Attendance at this guided tour (in Spanish) requires mandatory prior registration, respect for the limited capacity of 10 people per tour, and the mandatory use of a mask, in compliance with the COVID-19 protocol.
The photo exhibition SOCIB: “Researching the ocean, sharing the future” aims to bring the SOCIB scientific results closer to all audiences, promoting marine environmental awareness and ocean literacy. In addition, ai aims to publicizing the new technologies that SOCIB uses for observing, monitoring, and obtaining oceanographic data (gliders, oceanographic buoys, etc.), and some of the projects it carries out in the Mediterranean to promote real and effective sustainability in the Balearic Islands. This exhibition will be open access, also respecting the COVID-19 protocol.
Workshops for kids and ‘Speed Dating’ with CSIC Balears
In Palma, the 2021 European Researchers’ Night is promoted, together with the Institutional Representation of the CSIC in the Balearic Islands, SOCIB, and other scientific institutions, by the Balearic Islands University Policy and Research Directorate-General. As part of the organised activities, CSIC Balears proposes interactive games for kids and the general public, as well as ‘Speed Dating’ with scientists, with the collaboration of SOCIB. All these activities will take place in the historic center of Palma, in Ca n'Oleo, from 6.30 pm to 9 pm, and require prior reservation. About the 2021 European Researchers’ Night
All these activities are part of the European Researchers' Night, an event organised since 2005 by the European Commission, within the Marie Skłodowska-Curie programme of the Horizon Programme, in collaboration with a wide range of public and private institutions. Each year it takes place simultaneously in more than 300 cities in 30 European countries on the last Friday of September. It aims to bring researchers closer to the general public and to increase awareness of research and innovation activities, with a view to supporting the public recognition of researchers, creating an understanding of the impact of researchers' work on citizen’s daily life, and encouraging young people to embark on scientific careers. In the Balearic Islands, it has been celebrated since 2017 under the umbrella of the “Nit de la Recerca”.
