The Balearic Islands Coastal Observing and Forecasting System (ICTS SOCIB) is actively involved in the Euro-Argo ONE project (2025-2027), a key initiative aimed at reinforcing Europe’s contribution to the global OneArgo programme. As part of this effort, SOCIB has also participated in the project's kick-off meeting, in Paris, from February 17 to 19, 2025, at the Centre de Conférences Internationales, Sorbonne Université. Coordinated by Euro-Argo ERIC, this ambitious project aims to enhance the sustainability, resilience, and effectiveness of European ocean observation efforts.

The Euro-Argo ONE project brings together 23 European partners to align Euro-Argo ERIC with the OneArgo vision, improving scientific and technological capacities for long-term global ocean observation. The project focuses on optimizing data accessibility and service efficiency for researchers and policymakers while minimizing Argo’s environmental impact through industry collaboration on sustainable solutions. By developing a scalable strategy, it strengthens Euro-Argo ERIC’s leadership in oceanographic research, tackling operational challenges and reinforcing Europe’s role in global ocean monitoring, climate adaptation, and marine ecosystem conservation.

Within this framework, “ICTS SOCIB plays a key role in shaping OneArgo’s European strategy, ensuring a structured and coordinated expansion of the observation network. It enhances data accessibility, facilitates the flow of high-quality oceanographic information to operational users, and improves interoperability with other research infrastructures,” states Lara Díaz, head of the Lagrangian Platforms Facility and SOCIB’s principal investigator in the project. Additionally, “SOCIB actively addresses the environmental and operational challenges of maintaining and expanding the Argo array, promoting sustainable practices and fostering industry innovation,” she adds.

About OneArgo

OneArgo represents the next evolution of the Argo program, transitioning toward a global, full-depth, and multidisciplinary observation network. With expanded geographical reach, advanced sensor technology, and enhanced data management, it will significantly improve climate modeling, ocean forecasting, and marine resource management. The Euro-Argo ONE project and SOCIB multi-platform observing approach ensure that Europe remains at the forefront of ocean observing capabilities, driving innovation, and improving data accessibility. As part of this effort, ICTS SOCIB reaffirms its commitment to ocean research and environmental sustainability, strengthening the global ocean observation network.
