ICTS SOCIB hosts another edition of the "Nit de la Recerca" at Palma's port
The event allowed the public to learn about marine science and research through guided tours, educational activities, a photographic exhibition, and the screening of a short documentary.

With significant public participation, on Friday, September 27th, 2024, the Balearic Islands Coastal Observing and Forecasting System (ICTS SOCIB) held a new edition of the "Nit de la Recerca" at Palma’s Escalera Real. Hundreds of people enjoyed guided tours of the Research Vessel R/V SOCIB, where they got an up-close look at its scientific work, and participated in interactive activities focused on marine science outreach, all within the framework of the program promoted by the Govern de les Illes Balears through the Conselleria d'Educació i Universitats.

As part of the European Researchers' Night, ICTS SOCIB organized a series of activities open to the public aimed at bringing oceanographic science and research closer to society. One of the main attractions was the guided tour of the R/V SOCIB, a floating laboratory equipped with advanced technology used for research in the western Mediterranean. During these tours, participants saw firsthand the scientific equipment on board and learned about its role in monitoring marine ecosystems.
In addition to the guided tours, the program included activities like "Beers with Scientists," a dialogue space where participants could engage informally with researchers from ICTS SOCIB. Discussions focused on marine observation technologies, heatwave detection, and beach monitoring in response to climate change, all crucial issues for protecting marine ecosystems.
The event also featured the "SOCIB Kids" space, where the workshop "What oceanographer do you want to be?" was organized. This workshop, aimed at children aged 5 to 11, offered educational activities designed to spark interest in marine science through interactive games.
The photo exhibition "SOCIB: Researching the sea, sharing the future 2024" was also displayed. Through a carefully curated selection of images, the exhibition allowed attendees to understand the importance of ocean observatories and their crucial role in protecting the marine environment.
The day concluded with the screening of the short documentary "Del espacio al Mediterráneo: Persiguiendo corrientes marinas," which narrated the experiences of oceanographers from the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies IMEDEA (CSIC-UIB) and ICTS SOCIB during the campaigns of the FaSt-SWOT project aboard the R/V SOCIB.
