David March and Sebastián Lora participated at the International Conference on Marine Data & Information Systems (IMDIS) held in Lucca (Italy) September 23-25, 2013. The IMDIS cycle of conferences has the aim of providing an overview of the existing information systems to serve different users in ocean science. It also shows the progresses on development of efficient infrastructures for managing large and diverse data sets, standards, interoperable information systems, services and tools for education. IMDIS conference was organized by ENEA (Italian National agency for new technologies, Energy and sustainable economic development), jointly with SeaDataNet, IFREMER and IOC/IODE.

SOCIB presentation at IMDIS outlined the organizational and conceptual structure of SOCIB’s Data Centre and the components developed as an example of marine information systems within the framework of new ocean observatories and/or marine research infrastructures, emphasizing the main principles of standardization, interoperability and open access, in line with the INSPIRE Directive and other important European initiatives such as Emodnet or Copernicus, which are also some of the key information pillars of the Integrated Maritime Policy and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive.
