The Balearic Islands Coastal Observing and Forecasting System (ICTS SOCIB) joins the Mediterranean Day, an initiative led by the Union for the Mediterranean, to highlight the region's cultural, natural, and scientific richness. Celebrated every November 28, the day promotes tolerance, sustainable development, and cooperation—values that align closely with SOCIB.
In 2024, faced with challenges like climate change and biodiversity loss, the Mediterranean Day becomes a call to action to build a more sustainable future and strengthen the bond between communities and the sea.

Discover the 7 Principles of Ocean Literacy in the Mediterranean
As part of the Mediterranean Day 2024, explore the 7 Principles of Ocean Literacy through the unique lens of the Mediterranean Sea. This region, an epicentre of biodiversity and culture, plays a vital role in regulating the climate and sustaining coastal life.
This video highlights how our daily actions directly impact the sea and how ICTS SOCIB works to protect it. Dive into how the principles of ocean literacy inspire us to understand, value, and act for the Mediterranean's sustainability. It is a powerful tool to raise awareness about the importance of preserving this sea that unites communities, ecosystems, and cultures.

Educational workshops: "Let's take care of our beaches, adapting to climate change in the Mediterranean"
As part of the LIFE AdaptCalaMillor project, ICTS SOCIB brings environmental awareness to classrooms, promoting the care of the Mediterranean and its coastal ecosystems. Co-funded by the European Union, this project focuses on nature-based solutions to adapt Cala Millor beach to climate change, emphasizing sustainability and science.
These workshops, designed for 5th and 6th-grade students, tackle issues such as urbanization pressure and environmental challenges affecting Mediterranean coasts. Activities include reading the illustrated story "Saltar las olas" and creating mini-murals on climate adaptation for the beach, encouraging students to reflect on the impact of their actions on coastal protection.
From November 21 to December 16, 22 workshops will take place across six primary schools in Son Servera and Sant Llorenç des Cardassar, Mallorca.

Mediterranean Day: Sustainability, cooperation, and shared identity
The Mediterranean Day, initiated by the 42 member states of the Union for the Mediterranean and officially established in 2020, is celebrated every November 28 as a tribute to the region's unique cultural, natural, and scientific wealth. Inspired by the principles of the 1995 Barcelona Declaration, this day aims to make the Mediterranean a space for peace, progress, sustainability, and intercultural dialogue.
This year, under the theme “The next wave: building a shared tomorrow”, the celebration focuses on pressing challenges: climate change, biodiversity loss, inequality, and urban pressure. With the 2030 Agenda in mind, cooperation is more crucial than ever to turn these challenges into opportunities, moving toward a more resilient and prosperous Mediterranean.
