Driving long-term climate change adaptation in Cala Millor (Mallorca)
Promoting resilience against climate change: the LIFE AdaptCalaMillor project focuses on strengthening the adaptive capacity of infrastructures, ecosystem services, and the socio-economic fabric of Cala Millor in the face of climate challenges.
This ambitious European project aims to promote a long-term adaptation strategy for the beach system and urban environment of Cala Millor Bay, located in Mallorca. Through collaboration with national, regional, and local authorities in coastal areas, LIFE AdaptCalaMillor seeks to educate and empower in identifying climate risks and implementing innovative, science-based adaptation solutions for the Cala Millor community.
What is LIFE AdaptCalaMillor?
The Balearic Islands, given their island condition and tourism relevance, face particular challenges due to climate change. This project focuses on creating comprehensive and sustainable solutions for effective and long-term adaptation in Cala Millor. It promotes collaboration among the local, scientific, and academic community, public administration, and business sector, to identify adaptation strategies that are scientifically solid and have the support of the citizens.
Through an inclusive and multilevel governance approach, the physical, environmental, socioeconomic, and urban planning implications are explored. The purpose is to drive a transformation in the urban environment that safeguards the beaches and the tourism sector while simultaneously considering the social needs and expectations of the community.

ICTS SOCIB's contribution to the project
In a world increasingly impacted by climate change, the active and determined involvement of key actors is essential. In this context, ICTS SOCIB plays a crucial role in the LIFE AdaptCalaMillor project. This project stands out for its holistic approach to adapting to climate change in Cala Millor, fostering broad participation from governance to risk assessment and the development of replicable and transferable guidelines.
We conduct a detailed mapping of stakeholders, identifying and categorizing key actors at local, island, regional, and national levels, covering the public and private sectors, civil society, and the project's target audience.
We assess the expectations, needs, and requirements of public administrations to carry out an effective climate change adaptation project in Cala Millor.
We facilitate the involvement of public administrations through regular meetings, encouraging the exchange of knowledge in a participatory framework.
We provide technical training to stakeholders, using an integrative, practical, and multidisciplinary approach based on the project's scientific and technical findings.
We collaborate with schools, neighborhood associations, groups of elderly people, and tourism sector professionals to assess the perception of climate change among Cala Millor residents.
We promote environmental awareness in Cala Millor through educational workshops on beach morphodynamics, potential changes in the tourism model, and the local landscape.
We organize tours around Cala Millor with various social entities, where the project's scientific and technical staff explain the proposed measures on-site.
We develop a multi-risk methodology for urban beaches, applied and validated on Cala Millor Beach, evaluating impacts across physical, environmental, socioeconomic, and urban dimensions.
We investigate how different nature-based solutions can mitigate risks associated with climate change in Cala Millor.
We create guidelines for adaptive and integrated management of urban beaches in the face of global change, based on scientific principles and natural approaches.
