Gliders: "SOCIB and IMEDEA-TMOOS specific contributions at the 5th Everyone’s Gliding Observatories Workshop and glider school (EGO2011, Gran Canaria, 14-18 March 2011)"

21 de marzo de 2011

Marc Torner and Simó Cusi attended the 5th glider school in Gran Canaria. The two-day school allowed to gain first-hand experience with glider (Slocum, Seaglider and Spray) operations, from mechanical design to programming and communications, deployment and recovery and data processing.

The initial work describing on real time data processing and quality control procedures for thermal lag correction on un-pumped Slocum CTDs was presented as an oral presentation by Emma Heslop. This work follows the objectives outlined at IMEDEA 2010-2013 Strategic Plan and is also included in SOCIB Implementation Plan approved in April 2010

The oral presentation given by Simón Ruiz summarized the first results combining high resolution glider observations and atmospheric and ocean model outputs to study the response of the upper ocean to atmospheric forcing. The impact of the atmosphere-ocean interaction on the heat budget was evaluated and preliminary results demonstrate that latent and sensible heat loss dominate the net surface heat flux.
