Integrated Coastal Management: "SOCIB contribution to the Bulletin “Current Economic Situation in the Balearic Islands (Conjuntura Econòmica de les Illes Balears) published tri-annually by the D. G.
The article highlights the importance of Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) for achieving sustainability in the Balearic Islands and, hence, its significant role in enhancing the Island’s competitiveness as a tourism destination and in ensuring quality of life of residents. Specifically, the article describes the process of developing and implementing a system of indicators for ICZM in the Balearic Islands, initiated by IMEDEA (CSIC-UIB) in collaboration with the CES and continued by SOCIB since 2009. The critical role of governance for implementing ICZM and ensuring the effective integration of science with decision-making is highlighted. This article represents an important step towards SOCIB’s goal of listening to society needs and transferring scientific tools and knowledge to society and decision-makers in the Balearic Islands. First, because the article draws on the perspectives of a number of organizations, both “scientific” and “non-scientific” and, second, because this publication will reach a broader, public audience than traditional academic sources. The article was written by members of the SIAS team of SOCIB in collaboration with Ferran Navinés from the Economic and Social Council of the Balearic Islands (CES) and David Carreras from the Socio-environmental Observatory of Menorca (OBSAM).
