SOCIB at the 10th MONGOOS Workshop and General Assembly – Towards a full ocean data integration

On October 26-28, the Balearic Islands Coastal Observing and Forecasting System (SOCIB) co-organised the annual MONGOOS Workshop and General Assembly: 10 Years of Operational Oceanography in the Mediterranean Sea – Towards a Full Ocean Data Integration. This virtual event marked the tenth anniversary of the Mediterranean Operational Network for the Global Ocean Observing System (MONGOOS), formally established in 2012 to develop operational oceanography and the science and integration activities needed in the Mediterranean Sea. It furthermore capitalized on the partner’s achievements to support the Blue Growth agenda in the Mediterranean and meet the challenges of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, including SOCIB. The event was organised by the Ruđer Bošković Institute, in Croatia, OGS, in Italy, and Puertos del Estado, IMEDEA (CSIC-UIB) and SOCIB, in Spain.

The workshop, held from 26 to 27 October, integrated science-based knowledge and promoted solution-oriented research in the Mediterranean Sea. It also included oral presentations and informal discussions. As part of the programme, SOCIB convened sessions on sustained and integrated ocean observations and science-based downstream services and user-uptake in the Mediterranean Sea. First session included SOCIB presentations regarding the status of operations of the coastal HF radars in the Mediterranean Sea and multidisciplinary science-based applications (together with Puertos del Estado and NOLOGIN Consulting SL) as well as the formation, intensification, thermal impact and cross-shelf exchanges of strong long-lived anticyclonic mesoscale eddies in the Balearic Sea. In addition, an HF radar observing system simulation experiment in the Ibiza Channel was presented by SOCIB in session 2.

The workshop was followed by the MONGOOS General Assembly on 28 October that reflected on the achievements and challenges of the past decade, and the future of MONGOOS.

About MONGOOS

Formally established in 2012 (before the Mediterranean Operational Oceanography Network, since 2005), the Mediterranean Oceanographic Network for the Global Ocean Observing System (MONGOOS) promotes partnerships and capacity building. Furthermore, it develops an ongoing working framework with EuroGOOS (acting as EuroGOOS ROOS) and the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) Africa to define common roles and activities in the Mediterranean Sea and foster collaboration with all regional GOOS alliances.
