MARTECH24: SOCIB to showcase innovations at the 11th International Workshop on Marine Technology

From June 6 to 7, 2024, the 11th International Workshop on Marine Technology (MARTECH24) will take place at the Sa Riera building of the Universitat de les Illes Balears (UIB) in Palma. This event, organized by the UIB and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC - SARTI), will bring together leading researchers and industry professionals to explore the latest advancements in marine technology. Among the key highlights will be presentations the Balearic Islands Coastal Observing and Forecasting System (SOCIB).

The director of SOCIB, Joaquín Tintoré, will deliver a highly anticipated plenary talk on June 6th from 9:15 to 10:15 AM. His presentation, "SOCIB 2030: Integrated Multi-platform Ocean Observing and FAIR Data for Regional Digital Twins of the Ocean," will delve into SOCIB's forward-looking approach to ocean observation. Attendees will gain insights into how SOCIB integrates various observation platforms and applies FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) data principles to develop regional digital twins of the ocean, enhancing our ability to understand and manage marine environments effectively.

In addition to Tintoré's contributions, Nikolaos D. Zarokanellos, researcher at SOCIB’s Glider facility, will present on "Autonomous Ocean Observations: The Challenges for FAIR and Reliable Data for Digital Twins Development" (Session 1.2, June 6th). This presentation will address the complexities and solutions in ensuring data quality and reliability for digital twin development in ocean observations.

Furthermore, Guiomar López, head of SOCIB’s HF Radar facility, will discuss "Analysing High Frequency Radar Outages in the Ibiza Channel via HOORT: A Case Study" (Session 3.1, June 6th). This case study will provide an in-depth analysis of high-frequency radar outages in the Ibiza Channel using the High-Frequency Radar Online Outage Reporting Tool (HOORT).

MARTECH24 offers a comprehensive programme that includes a wide array of topics such as applications of marine technology, renewable marine energy, and advancements in robotics, AI, sensors, and communication systems. It serves as a vital platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration among experts dedicated to the advancement of marine technology.
