The Balearic Islands Coastal Observing and Forecasting System (SOCIB) is a Unique Scientific and Technical Infrastructure (ICTS), created in 2007 by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Education and the Government of the Balearic Islands. In 2020, the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) joined it as a partner. Since 2014, it has joined the Map of Unique Scientific and Technical Infrastructures.

SOCIB Multi-platform Observing and Forecasting System
SOCIB operates a multi-platform observing and forecasting system that continuously and sustainably monitors the western Mediterranean and especially the Balearic Sea. This system includes surface drifting buoys, profilers, 16 coastal stations installed in different ports and coastal areas of the Balearic Islands, 2 metocean buoys installed in the Ibiza Channel and the Bay of Palma, the SOCIB Research Vessel R/V (length of 24 meters), 2 high-frequency coastal radar stations, 7 gliders and 3 beach monitoring systems. Furthermore, the Modelling and Forecasting Facility develops high-resolution forecasting models.
