Integrated Coastal Zone Management: "System of Indicators for ICZM in the Balearic Islands cited in the Government of the Balearic Islands’ Economic Bulletin"

30 de març de 2011

The DG of the Economy of the Government of the Balearic Islands publishes an Economic Bulletin (Conjuntura econòmica de les Illes Balears) three times a year. The publication contains a section related to the environment which, in the latest publication of march 2011, was related to sustainable development and the subsequent importance of Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) in the Balearic Islands (see page 49 – 59 of the attached file). In relation to this, the article cites the System of Indicators for ICZM in the Balearic Islands, a project which was initiated through a collaboration between the Mediterranean Institute of Advanced Studies (IMEDEA), a joint research centre of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the University of the Balearic Islands, and the Economic and Social Council (CES) of the Balearic Islands, and which has been continued by SOCIB since 2009 (http://costabalearsostenible.com/PDFs/es_libroindicadores.pdf).

Significant progress has been made with respect to the implementation of the indicators including a pilot project on the Island of Menorca, the involvement of a number of additional, key stakeholders on the island (e.g. IBESTAT, OBSAM) and the inclusion of the system in the Official Statistics Plan (2010 – 2013) of the Government of the Balearic Islands (Decreto 109, 2010). In this context, the article concludes with an overview of trends related to 17 of the most relevant indicators in the system at the regional level for the Islands. This article corresponds with one of SOCIB’s key objectives which is the transfer of science to society through the effective integration of science with governance and decision-making on the Islands.
