SOCIB Data Terms of Use

Access conditions

The Balearic Islands Coastal Observing and Forecasting System (SOCIB) strongly supports the open access initiative (no fee to publish or to read) and uses the Creative Commons Attribution License (CC BY 4.0). The SOCIB Data Repository is an open access repository which means that all content is freely available without charge to the user or their institution. Users are allowed to read, download, copy, distribute, search, or use SOCIB's data for any lawful purpose (commercial and non-commercial), without asking prior permission and provided that changes made on original data are indicated and the original data is cited appropriately.

In accordance with the legal framework in force, access to data is subject to regulatory exceptions and the following supplementary provisions:
  • To give PhD students and scientists time for publishing before any wider distribution of the data (“moratorium”), usually between 2 and a maximum of 4 years.
  • To protect the environment of sensitive areas and/or of sensitive species (e.g. fisheries data, sea turtle data), giving restricted access to individuals or project-related accounts (e.g. scientific studies).
  • To restrict access to datasets produced in the frame of external projects and therefore, subject to a different data policy.
  • To restrict access to datasets with a low level of curation.
  • To protect data that have been collected in the EEZ of foreign countries, according to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (Montego Bay), if no other international convention is applicable to these data (e.g. bathymetry).
  • To protect data that may be related to Spanish strategic interests (e.g. Spanish Navy).
Access to this “restricted data” is managed either by providing guest-users credentials or through dedicated platforms with authentication protocols.

Acknowledgement

Users of the SOCIB Data Repository shall acknowledge properly (see Open Access Policy) the source of the data following the format:
“Data obtained from the Balearic Island Coastal and Observing Forecasting System (SOCIB) Data Repository. [year-of-data-download], [Title], [Data access URL], accessed [date-of-access]"
where the slice in coral is only mandatory in case of bibliographic references and in such cases placeholders within brackets are to be filled accordingly. Example:
"Data obtained from the Balearic Island Coastal Observing and Forecasting System (SOCIB) Data Repository. 2010, Data from instrument IME-MET002 on platform Station Salines, https://apps.socib.es/data-catalog, accessed 2010-10-18"
In addition, and if applicable, further organisations funding or contributing to the data used can be acknowledged next.
In the case of using data products, if a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) is available, users are encouraged to better use the associated CITE US statement (see citation below), which will enable reproducibility.

Citation

Users of the SOCIB Data Repository’s data products with a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) shall properly cite the source of the data with the CITE-US statement available on its landing page. Example for the SOCIB HF Radar Ibiza data:
“Tintoré, J., Lana, A., Marmain, J., Fernández, V., Casas, B., & Reyes, E. (2020). HF Radar Ibiza data from date 2012-06-01 ( Version {x.y.z}) [Data set]. Balearic Islands Coastal Observing and Forecasting System, SOCIB. https://doi.org/10.25704/17GS-2B59
where the version number within braces (in coral) is to be replaced by the particular version number used to guarantee reproducibility. Example:
"Tintoré, J., Lana, A., Marmain, J., Fernández, V., Casas, B., & Reyes, E. (2020). HF Radar Ibiza data from date 2012-06-01 (Version 1.0.1) [Data set]. Balearic Islands Coastal Observing and Forecasting System, SOCIB. https://doi.org/10.25704/17GS-2B59".
