Balearic RIssaga Forecasting System (BRIFS)

The meteotsunami prediction system of the Balearic Islands Coastal Observing and Foracsting System of the Balearic Islands (ICTS SOCIB), the Balearic RIssaga Forecasting System (BRIFS), developed in collaboration with AEMET and PortsIB, aims to predict the genesis, occurrence, and propagation of meteotsunamis or “rissagues” in the port of Ciutadella (Menorca, Spain).

Meteotsunamis are sea level oscillations of extraordinary amplitude forced by atmospheric disturbances. To simulate sea level oscillations in the port of Ciutadella, a coupled ocean-atmosphere model with multiple nested domains is used to predict these extreme events, known as “rissagues”.

Collaboration Networks

The Modelling and Forecasting Facility of the ICTS SOCIB actively participates in international, European, national, and regional competitive projects to address the challenges of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030). Additionally, it collaborates closely with companies, public administrations, and managers to promote sustainable, science-based management of marine and coastal resources in the Balearic Islands.

Ongoing research is being conducted to improve the system. Particular events caused by very local phenomena are difficult to reproduce. This prediction system is intended to complement the current AEMET "rissagues" alert system, providing quantitative predictions of sea level oscillations in the port of Ciutadella. The timely delivery of daily predictions is not guaranteed.
